Innovative Golf Learning Center unveiled at Desert Canyon Golf Resort

ORONDO, WA May 13, 2004 -- Since its inception in 1993, Desert Canyon Golf Resort has offered the unique experience of world-class desert golf in the northwest. Now the destination resort will unveil “the ultimate golf learning center” featuring learning possibilities previously unheard of in the area.

The Golf Learning Center at Desert Canyon, located in Orondo, Wash., is comprised of the latest in technology for teaching swing fundamentals and will be open to the public in late May 2004. “We have acquired teaching tools that will enable us to offer instructional training previously only available to tour professionals. These devices take the guess work out of club fitting and swing training, resulting in lower scores and a more fulfilling golf experience for the average golfer,” said Jack Frei, Desert Canyon Golf Resort developer and PGA professional.

Frei is most excited about offering sessions on the Ball Flight Monitor (BFM) by Swing Dynamics. The BFM analyzes the player’s ball flight in order to customize clubs to the player’s individual swing. This mechanism has previously been unavailable to Northwest golfers. Tour departments for major club manufacturers, top instructional schools, and leading custom equipment fitting companies all use ball flight analysis technology to enable their professional players to optimize golf club, shaft and ball selection.

Similarly, sessions on the Putting Track Monitor, also by Swing Dynamics, are available to provide the same club-fitting technology for putters as the BFM does for drivers.

Along with the aforementioned club-fitting technology, the Golf Learning Center will have state-of-the-art video equipment allowing for comparisons of the student’s swing against actual PGA touring professionals on new flat screen televisions.

“The Desert Canyon Golf Learning Center is a technologically advanced educational and golf equipment facility. We are going to do everything from finding the perfect driver or putter with our Ball Flight and Putting Track monitors to improving your mental game with our on-site sport psychologist,” said Ryan Long, Head Instructor at the Learning Center.

Long is the Golf Learning Center’s first in-house sport psychologist and is a PGA apprentice with a Master of Science Degree in Psychology from Western Washington University.

“I like to teach from a mental point of view. Every action is preceded by a thought whether you are conscious of it or not. The idea is to find out your thought patterns and how it affects your swing,” said Long, who also has over 25 years golf experience. Long utilizes guided imagery in a mildly relaxed state to facilitate the visualization process which is crucial for any successful golfer.

Along with offering advanced golf instruction, the Golf Learning Center boasts the award-winning Desert Canyon Golf Resort. From the time it opened, Desert Canyon has earned such accolades as “Best Public Course In Washington,” Golf Digest’s Four and a Half Star Award for “Places To Stay,” “The Best Resort Course In Washington” and it is one of the “Top Ten Golf Courses For Women” in America.

While the golf course is the star attraction of the resort, there is plenty more to see and experience. The brand-new Great Links Resorts Lodge encompasses 21 guest suites available for nightly stays or as part of a vacation home point package. A driving range, full-service PGA pro shop, restaurant and banquet facility, pool and tennis and a championship-putting course are also on-site for guests.
